Interview with Caellus & Camulus

The record label, World of Caellus, was borne from a passion for pursuing the dark, fantasy elements to science fiction that coincide with the world as we know it. The story chapter that will simultaneously be released alongside the album is a monthly e-magazine with monthly-published chapters.

Recently releasing "Genesis", a Trance music album containing 15 instrumental songs, one of them being a Downtempo track, and another being a Big Room / Progressive House track. The majority of the journey, however, takes place in a smooth, spine-chilling progression of Trance tracks from start to finish.

Let get started

What is your artist name?

Hi, it's Caellus & Camulus.

Who are the members? What is your role in the band

It's just me, I know the two names could be misleading but they are two of the main characters of my story, so I adopted them as my alias. I'm the composer, producer and artist.

Where are you from?

I was born in Colombia (not Columbia) where I lived until my 20's, then I immigrated to this wonderful country we call America, where I've lived ever since.

In what year did the project form?

With this alias, just this year.

How old were you when you first got into the music scene? What got you started in music?

I was 26 years old when I seriously got into music production. I remember living in Long Island, New York (Brentwood) when I was making music with a PS videogame called "MTV Music Generator" haha, then I met Dj Eco online on a forum whom after a few weeks of chit chatting introduced me to FL Studio. I've always been a Trance music fan, so this allowed me to create my own music and I thank him for that. :)

Are you touring?

No, due to some limitations, I'm not able to, so if people want to support me buy my music, read my story, buy my art. ;)

What are some of your good and bad traits as an artist?

Good or bad varies from each people’s perspective, so I won’t call them good or bad, they are just my traits. I treat music as what it is, a form of art, and through it, I express my emotions and reveal my vision. As an artist I make sure that my music has soul, that it has emotions impregnated all over, be it Trance, be it Dubstep or any other type of music, you’ll hear and see this trait in my projects.
That comes at a cost too, my friends and family keep telling me that if I wished to really make it I need to make commercial music, mainstream, music that it’s acceptable by the masses today and I refuse to do that, I’m very stubborn about it and I won’t budge even it my economical situation gets tough, the beauty of music comes first, I want to release music that I can listen to over and over without getting tired of it.

What genre is your music?

For the past 12 years it’s been Trance, I ventured into Electro House a few years ago as “Quaver” proposing a different approach, but I love the musicality of Trance music. That being said, my plans to venture into melodic Bass music and Down Tempo are taking form as I speak, so fans will witness that side from me within a couple of years.

Why did you pick that particular style?

Trance has always being my passion since way before I became an artist. I still remember closing my eyes and listening to Robert Miles (Children), Dj Quicksilver (Planet Love) and Ralph Fridge (Angel), oh Gosh, I’m old! Lol when I still lived in Colombia, and I came here and I discovered even more artists such as The Quest (Rank 1), Alphazone, Gouryella and many more. The way it makes you feel, the euphoria, the hypnotic sounds, the surrounding atmospheres and angelic vocals is like no other type of music except maybe film score music. To me Trance is like today’s classical music.

Have you released any albums or singles?
I’ve released plenty of singles as my old alias “Der Mystik”, just do a search on Google or a store like Beatport.com and you’ll find my entire repertoire. As Caellus & Camulus, I’ve got an album coming out this July 11th, it’s titled “Genesis”, it will feature 15 tracks that you don’t want to miss. Pre-orders at iTunes are available now here:

How old are you now?

My flesh is 38 years old but my soul (mind) is split in two different ages, sometimes I act like 50, other times like 20! XD.

Tell me your biggest influences and which artists have inspired you produce music.

The biggest influences that shaped the young me were definitely Dj Eco, Ace Da Brain and Airbase. My biggest influences now are just too many to count, but if I had to mention a few they would be Thomas Bergersen, Ryan Amon, Junkie XL and Nathan Red.

What was your Best track ever produced?

I can’t pick, they are all my babies, but the one that made me feel like I reached a milestone was a remix I did for Airbase. Look it up it’s awesome, I think… I hope! :D Airbase – Escape (Der Mystik’s Final Chapter Remix) just have in mind that it was produced in 2008.

What places will you be playing in the near future?

Probably I’ll be playing some FIFA 16 at my brother’s house the next holiday, this time I’m making sure to kick his ass with multiple goals in. Not what you meant with the question? Well, I don’t gig yet, so what answer did you expect! lol

Which Dj/Producer is the best that you've seen live? What made their show so good?

Paul Oakenfold and Eddy Halliwell at Rain (Las Vegas). Besides a few too many drinks? The fact that they are Djs that can actually spin, unlike lots of Djs nowdays that molest their mixer knobs to look busy, while playing a pre-recorded show. You know who they are. :P

If you could go anywhere in the world to perform, where would you go and why?

If I could perform it would be in Colombia, my people know how to fuckin’ party.
Where does a majority of your inspiration come from? Older music or more modern music?
From all kinds of modern music, just not mainstream music.

Who is your current favorite artists today?

In my scene? There are quite a few such as Nathan Red, Robert Vadney, Angelica S, Ohmaniac, Jewelia, Taylor Thomas.

Do you produce in a studio?

No, I either produce at home or at my day job’s computer (Yah my boss is awesome like that).

These days free music downloading has become the norm. It's a constant struggle for artists to make money from music sales. How do you feel about this?

There was a time in the past that I became very anal about it, until I understood that a true fan will support you however they can, however, buying your music, going to your gigs, wearing your t-shirt, recommending your music to their friends etc. It also helped me understand that a fan will get your music however they can, because they love your music so much that they gotta have it and I can’t penalize my fans for that, either if they get the music by buying it or sharing it (legally or not), from the bottom of my heart I say that I’m flattered. I’ve struggled in life where I had to decide between having lunch or buy that song I always wanted to buy and I know that when things get better, they will support me by buying my music.
That is why I try to make at least one song every six months for free. Early this year was a bootleg, this July there will be another one from the album (in the e-magazine) and by the end of the year there will be a brand new one.
Just follow me at my http://www.soundcloud.com/worldofcaellus so you don’t miss out. ;)

What would be your dream collaboration?

There are two, Airbase, he is a true Trance master, and then Nathan Red, but I’m already fulfilling that dream with the later as I’m working on my second album with him. ;)
Besides your own music, what genres and bands do you listen to?
My taste in music is wide. I listen to pretty much anything except mainstream EDM, Country music and Banda (Mexican music genre). Acts that I love besides the ones I’ve already mentioned are Noah Neiman, Armin van Buuren, Sigur Ros, Melanie Martinez and Seven Lions.

Who in your life is your biggest motivator?

My whole family, specially my mom and my dad, some of my friends, a shout out to Tiffany Michelle, Elmer Ortega, Diana Arevalo and Hector Valiente! :D

Are you a part of any other musical projects?

Yes, I’m collaborating with Nathan Red and several vocalists on the second album, but I can’t give more details yet.

Have you been in any other bands before this one?

Nope

Do you have a job other than your music career?

Who doesn’t or didn’t have. I proudly work for Digital Satellite Zone, the best Spanish Dish Network and Directv dealer, hahaha.

Do you have any webpages?

Yes. Make sure to check this one constantly as I’ll publish my fantasy/sci-fi story there.
http://www.worldofcaellus.com
I’m also on facebook.com, instragram.com, twitter.com pinterest.com, soundcloud.com with /worldofcaellus. ;) ;)

Considering the major changes in todays music industry in the digital world and the rise in home studios/DIY independent artists. What do you think is the future of the music industry?  Is this good or bad in your view?

Who knows?! *shrugs* technology is a big influencer in those changes and we see bigger and better technologies every day. I see the demise of mp3 downloads with streaming as the standard of music accessibility. I see people craving for something tangible again, so the music industry will not give you discs (although vinyl is on the rise again) but chips to stick in your body and stream it directly to your wireless weightless headphones. The sky is the limit!
I see music synchronizing with art and literature for a full experience, which by the way, it’s the whole idea behind “World of Caellus”, my record label. ;)

How would you describe your sound in one sentence?

Mysterious

What is your favorite instrument?

Here is another secret about me, I can’t play any instrument, everything I write is in my head and then I compose it click by click on my computer, except the obvious use of royalty free samples or custom paid recorded parts. What instrument I love? The piano and someday I’ll learn to play it.

Any pearls of wisdom for all other bands out there with less experience than you?

Work hard even when others tell you that you are not good enough, be humble while you are in the bottom as well as when you’ve reached the top, don’t forget the people who helped you up, make music for you first then think about anyone else, and don’t burn bridges unless you can’t really help it.

What advice would you give less experienced band, that you wish someone had given you?

Don’t work with family, I think this applies to all kinds of businesses. I’m sure there are the rare exceptions but in most cases, working with family members is a major pain in the ass.
And this one is free, if you are seeking to get signed to a major label, independent or not, they seek to close 360 deals with you, that means recording, publishing and touring. You can’t sign a publishing deal if you use samples, EVEN ROYALTY FREE SAMPLES that you buy!! So, if you want to get in the bigger leagues, make sure everything is original; I just learned that this year.
